ok, so finished up school finally... not sure where I'm currently standing with the school, but I'm moving ahead with my work. I've start into hands and feet studies, and working hard on character rotations... I'll be posting a few this weekend I hope.
and here is the final reductive drawing... the image didn't turn out great cause I didn't have the proper lighting to capture it, but it turned out great...
And I was finally able to finish off the leica reel
I'm still not really happy about the final few seconds... I'll likely be extending the finale a bit beyound the music to have him fly away a bit smoother and further... with more emphasis on his celebration

Starting to put more characterization into the subway sketching... I'll be trying to the push the exaggerations and try to work in full body characterization...
Layout - I haven't really posted much work from layout in the past, cause its another course that I've struggled til recently... This first one is the last assignment in the course... had to replicate a pan from Pinocchio We also did a few scenes from curious george... didn't push them to the final line, but think I get across the proper structure and layout for the scenes...
I'll likely be posting more school stuff before the end of the weekend, still trying to organize the studio... its just a mountain of paper still....
Well year 2 is coming to a finish... have to admit the crunch period really got me this year.. I still have a few more final assignments to finish up over the weekend... but not really going to sweat it too much...
ok, so I got the secound set of prolonged poses to start posting... Still have the final pose next week, but think they are turning out pretty well... This first one is a reductive technique, which I kinda messed up on... I didn't have any willow charcoal, so its a soft pastel which doesn't really get removed very easily... turned out darker then it should..
Right, and the final cartooning assignments... I won't really go into too much detail, but suffice to say that I've struggled with cartooning in the past... but I think I've really started to work the concepts properly, and hopefully I can greatly improve my character design over the summer.
I've decided to move ahead with my animation project this month, I'll have the character rotation and some poses to post later
Way off track for my new years resolution... again... but school has been insane... here is a quick life drawing post... Here are some new quick contour with watercolour exercises... There are 4 drawings in this series, which includes a new reductive technique... its essentially a painting technique using charcoal on new print... the entire class had amazing results from it.
I'll be trying to post more of my animation work later this week... I'm actually starting to head into production on a short 30 second animation set to some free music... (I know there are some continuity errors in how he holds the umbrella, those will be fixed in the final)
Right, so the term has come into full swing, work is mounting, and stress is building. Therefor I have a ton of work to post, and unlike before I'm dedicated to actually getting it posted on here.
First off, cartooning, we have started doing full character sketches from animation stills. These are copied works from "The Brave Little Tailor" a personal favourite short of mine. We are apparently going to be doing a ton more mickey's so look forward to that I guess.
Also started up the anatomy course this term, which I've really taken a liking to. a lot more then I thought I would, but it seems to have already improved my life drawing a great deal.
And a little life drawing for good measure. These are sustained studies, an hour for each. I approach them as an extended gesture using sighting and point to point to help with proportions, which are still off. (still working on that)
and finishing up with some animation. Yet again, Youtube, and terrible capturing software have butchered this animation, and sadly I can't reshoot it to make it look prettier. Oh well... I've actually advanced well beyound where my class is currently at. seem to be able to draw special effects as though they were second nature (well at least water effects) So I should be posting a bunch of new animation soon...
Alright, as promised, here is the weekly update... starting off with some facial gestures from Snow White. These were drawn from frames of the movie, so I really can't take any credit for them. I'll be posting a bunch of new cartooning gestures in the coming days and weeks. The purpose of the exercise is to create a visual vocabulary of poses and gestures to draw from once I start to create my own characters. And Life drawing. We haven't really covered too many new exercises in life drawing, just hammering home the fundamentals. Making sure there is a good comprehension of the relationships of the major masses in the body.
Oh, and for good measure, here are a few animation I've completed since the start of the new year. Apologizes for the terrible quality of the image, but it keeps degrading with each layer of animation, and uploading them to youtube certainly didn't help. This is the first attempt at animating water... think I knocked it right out of the park... enjoy
Right, here are some scary pictures of the accumulated artwork from school... This first one, that's life drawing, all of it... well most of it, I've thrown out a few days worth of it, but thats still a ton.
So how much animation have you done? about 2 inches worth, (plus there a few scenes from LBH project that haven't even joined that stack yet)
The painting mountain isn't very big, but represents far too much time... its the pile on upper right hand of the drafting desk. Oh and thats a new background from LBH stretched out there.
right, I'm back in school tomorrow, so hopefully I'll still have a chance to post more work over the coming weeks, but if not, I'll be sure to dump it on here when I hit the 6 week break.
Sorry about forgetting about this blog, but needless to say that the painting a day experiment petered out. I did manage up to 5 days, but got too busy with other work, till summer ended. Anyways, finally gotten a break from school so figure I'd post some work from the year so far. I'm gunna try to get a bunch over work up over the entire week. least attempt to practice regular update...
Couple of boxed form drawings, and a modelled drawing using india ink(on cardboard backing)
oh, and finally started to learn how to animate
got a few more little test animation, but have to wait to later this month to put them up. Plus these are a bit poorly shot, so might repost them later.
Alright, as promised, I made it out to draw at Dr. Sketchy's which was an incredible experience. I'm certainly going to try to make it to every session humanly possible... good crowd, great models... (they were seriously posing in high heels all night, big kudos there) these drawings don't really do the poses justice, so hopefully I can do better next session.
and now its getting to image life drawing without a bar nearby...
